My name is Sarah Song and I am running to represent District 4 on the San Diego County Board of Education. I am a graduate of our local public schools here in San Diego. I am also a former elementary school educator with the Oakland Unified School District & substitute teacher with the County’s Juvenile Court & Community schools.

Currently, I work for a cutting-edge inquiry-based curriculum developer, where we support students in becoming independent thinkers.

Teaching in Oakland, showed me that all students are capable of great academic accomplishments when they simply have a team who regularly challenges them and holds them up to high expectations. By providing quality learning content, improving teacher training and support, while also changing our mindset that our students are more than capable of exceeding our expectations of them, I believe that our students will excel in their lives during and after they graduate from our schools. As a network of schools that specifically serves our students struggling with homelessness, transitioning out of the justice system, or living in foster care, it is the County’s responsibility to make sure our youth are appropriately prepared for success after they graduate; not simply pushed to the closest finish line.

My hope is that with my experience as a teacher leader, curriculum expert, and passionate youth advocate, I will be able to promote change within the County’s current structure of student learning. Our youth deserve people who will stand up and fight for their right to a quality education regardless of their backgrounds, just like their flourishing peers throughout San Diego County.
